“New Fascisms” Without Uniforms: Identity, Nation and Sacred

Organized by IMIC Zajedno and TPO Fondacija, a new series of talks and lectures dedicated to key social issues in contemporary society officially began on Monday, May 11, 2026. The first guest of the series was Nerzuk Ćurak, who delivered a thought-provoking lecture titled “New Fascisms” Without Uniforms: Identity, Nation, and the Sacred.

Speaking about modern forms of fascism, Ćurak warned that today they no longer appear through recognizable symbols and uniforms, but rather through sophisticated political and social processes that gradually penetrate public spaces and the institutions of democratic societies.

The lecture and discussion were moderated by journalist Nikola Vučić. During the conversation, participants addressed a number of issues concerning the state of democracy and human rights in the modern world. Particular attention was given to the ways in which certain ideologies use the mechanisms of liberal democracy to reintroduce misogyny, Islamophobia, racism, hostility toward migrants, the normalization of genocide, and the increasing militarization of society into political discourse.

The program brought together intellectuals, activists, and representatives of civil society with the aim of strengthening dialogue, human rights, and mutual understanding in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Participants emphasized that such trends pose a serious challenge to human rights and the contemporary international order. At the same time, they stressed that religions and interfaith encounters still hold strong potential for creating spaces of dialogue, humanity, and coexistence.

The discussion concluded that gatherings such as this make an important contribution to strengthening a culture of peace and mutual understanding in Bosnia and Herzegovina, while also sending a message that society today needs stronger engagement from all those who believe in solidarity, tolerance, and open dialogue.
