THE FOURTH SOCRATES CAFE IN TUZLA: FREEDOM
"How much is possible to achieve the maximum of freedom at any given moment?" - asked one of the participants of Socrates Cafe held in Tuzla on November 27, 2019. Jasmina Husanović facilitated the Cafe. She is the professor at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Tuzla.
Participants emphasized that freedom is, primarily, insouciance for them and that they are aware of the fact that it is a privilege in different parts of the world.
They also cited Rousseau's thought that "man is born free, but is shackled everywhere", that describes the global situation in modern society.
In accordance with that, one may have an illusion of freedom of choice, while we are actually limited and conditioned in various ways.
In addition, not all societies have the same norms, which implies that they do not have the same attitude towards freedom and that "conquering freedom" is culturally conditioned. They say the key is education and socialization, but according to the current state of affairs, at least in our country, the message society sends to young people is that the slave mentality and conformism are more rewarding and more socially acceptable.
