Globalizing world brings global challenges and among them we find various forms of xenophobia that underpin animosities, fear and conflicts. Jewish cultural, educational and humanitarian society “La Benevolencija” and TPO Foundation from Sarajevo, with the support of Council of Europe, implemented the project “Fighting anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and xenophobia in public education system” in three high-school and two primary schools in the Old Town Sarajevo in the period from 01.11.2021. do 25.02.2022. Workshops were carried out by: professor Zilka Spahić Šiljak PhD, Dr. Muhamed Velagić, Dr. Eli Tauber,Vladimir Andrle and Igor Bencion Kožemjakin.
Fifteen workshops were held in the five following schools: Primary School „Saburina“, Primary School „Mula Mustafa Bašeskija“, „Catholic School Center“, „First Bosniak Gymnasium“ and “High-school for textile, leather and design.”
New methods for the workshops, which is based on interactive learning with P4C (critical, creative, collaborative, caring) was applied. In this way, all students participated, listen each other, worked in groups on the stimulus prepared by trainers – pictures with anti-Semitic and Islamophobic messages, presented their findings and discuss the chosen questions they offered for voting.
In ethnically homogenize school with children who demonstrated low level of general education accompanied with transgenerational traumatic experiences), it is crucial to expose children and teachers to intercultural environments where they can learn how to work on their own stereotypes and prejudices.
In addition to this, on the occasion of Human Rights Day a panel discussion “Hate speech in public” with panelist Jakob Finci and Muhamed Velagić was held and the exibition of art work of the High-school for textile, leather and design students.
