UNIGEM: 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM - DIFFERENT BUT EQUAL: DIFFERENCES AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE AND DISCRIMINATION (UNIVERSITY OF TUZLA)
Date 06.12.2021. year, students and employees of the University of Tuzla were given a lecture on Different but Equal: Differences against gender-based violence and discrimination. The lecture was held online via the zoom application. The lecture was attended by 50 participants, including students of Psychology and employees of the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Tuzla. The aim of the lecture was to emphasize the role of gender in the experience and behavior of individuals in different periods of life and in different areas of life, and to point out the importance of recognizing gender and gender specificity in different areas of work and activities.
After a discussion on whether psychological research comparing men and women is useful or dangerous and whether research promotes inequality between men and women in society, it was concluded that additional caution is needed in developing the methodological framework of these studies and the possibility of interpreting the results. In order to be able to rely on the results of research that talk about differences, it is necessary to give answers to questions about how similar the sexes are, and look for the causes of differences and similarities. It is important to take into account the issue of objectivity and not to exaggerate the importance of differences or similarities, because this can justify unequal treatment of men and women in different contexts and thus promote gender inequality.
