16 days of activism: Workshops, discussions, lectures, and promotions at the University “Džemal Bijedić” in Mostar (UNMO)

As part of the campaign “16 days of activism for gender equality” at the University “Džemal Bijedić” in Mostar (UNMO), various activities were held with the aim of raising the level of awareness about the problems of gender-based violence and discrimination. The activities were organized and implemented as part of the project “Introduction of gender-aware policies in higher education/University and gender mainstreaming (UNIGEM)” which the TPO Foundation implements in partnership with 19 universities from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Croatia, and Serbia, with the aim of ensuring integrity and quality in higher education.

The commemoration of the Campaign at this institution began on December 6th, 2022, with the workshop “Understanding masculinity: how to develop gender responsibility” at the UNMO Faculty of Law. The workshop was moderated by the well-known BiH journalist, editor, and author of the book “Critique of Toxic Masculinity”, Nikola Vučić, which is based on his scientific research on this issue.

The first regional research on gender-based violence in academic communities, presented in the book “Challenges of integrating gender equality in the university community: Against gender-based violence” edited by prof. Ph.D. Zilka Spahić Šiljak, prof. Ph.D. Jasna Kovačević and prof. Ph.D. Jasmina Husanović was promoted on December 7th, 2022. The book was promoted by: prof. Ph.D. Rebeka Kotlo, UNMO Faculty of Law and coordinator of the UNIGEM project for UNMO, prof. Ph.D. Asim Peco, Faculty of Teaching UNMO, prof. Ph.D. Veldin Ovčina, Faculty of Economics UNMO, and the discussion was moderated by M.Sc. Edisa Demić, while the UNIGEM project was presented in front of the TPO Foundation by coordinators Ivana Kulić and Iskra Tafro. The promotion was attended by representatives of the academic community, as well as numerous students who showed great interest in the topics of gender equality. Lectures with workshops and discussions were held on December 7th, 8th and 9th, 2022 at the UNMO Faculty of Law, and the focus areas were: Human rights and gender equality, prohibition of discrimination and gender equality, and gender-based violence and gender equality. Lectures at the workshops were held by the rector of the University “Džemal Bijedić” in Mostar and the professor at the Faculty of Law, prof. Ph.D. Alena Huseinbegović and coordinator of the UNIGEM project for the University “Džemal Bijedić” in Mostar and professor at the Faculty of Law prof. Ph.D. Rebecca Kotlo. The focus of these activities was on education and healthy discussions, with an aim of animating students for active engagement, elaborating and analysing contractual-legal cases on human rights, gender equality, stereotypes and prejudices, prohibition of discrimination, gender dimension in society, research, and higher education.

As a final activity, the promotion of the publication that explores the topics of gender equality with a special focus on discrimination against pregnant women “Violence against pregnant women in Bosnia and Herzegovina – family, health system and working relations” by dr. sc. Zlatan Hrnčić, and a same-titled workshop were held on December 9th, 2022 at the UNMO Faculty of Law.
