CULTURE OF MEMORY – PILAR PROGRAM

TPO Foundation PILAR (Program for Interdisciplinary Learning and Research) in May, 2022 gathered students from the University of Zenica in Srebrenica aiming at dealing with the past withing the mutual project Culture of Memory. Interdisciplinary classrooms were run by professor Edisa Gazetić, psychiatrist Dr. Amra Delić and Dr. Melina Sadiković who discussed selective memory and politization of memory themes with students.

These classrooms are part of the previous mutual project Politicized memories: struggle for the territory of collective memory organized by TPO and University of Zenica in 2016 in Jajce. The main aim of these projects and initiatives is to help youth from former Yugoslav region to face war narratives in the places of the worst destruction and crimes in the last war (1991-1995). This is important because in BiH we still have politicized memories about the previous wars accompanied with selective memories in daily social life.

Only proper dealing with the past can bring progress in terms of selective memory abandonment, denying war crimes and etc. These kinds of projects help youth to develop sense of responsibility and justice for all.

Students emphasized that in our lives we have culture of forgetfulness and therefore we need to educate youth about the past to be able to understand victims and to tell the truth about genocide to avoid repeating this to new generation.
