From Monday 20.02. Regional Winter School “Gender and Globalization” begins. The winter school “Gender and Globalization” is organized by the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies – prof. Ph.D. Zdravko Grebo of the University of Sarajevo and TPO Foundation in the period from February 20 to 26, 2023 in Sarajevo. The focus is on international and regional economic and political perspectives at the intersection of gender and development. The program is intended for second and third-year undergraduate and master’s students studying law, economics, politics, and related sciences at 19 partner universities from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia, and Montenegro, which are implementing the UNIGEM project (University and gender-mainstreaming) in the period from 2021 to 2025, with the support of the Government of the United Kingdom.
This school will question how globalization, migration, and especially the legal regulation of migration policies in European countries shape the roles of women and men in the fields of politics, economy, and culture, but also how national and transnational power politics are used. Through an intersectional approach, students will discuss how the concepts of transnationalism, globalization, migration, and gender permeate institutions of power, economic development, employment, and the actions of government institutions and civil society. The analysis is focused on the contemporary currents of globalization in which gender roles are constructed, the understanding of masculine and feminine in relation to the power dynamics of global society, the ways in which government policies and laws weaponize migration, and how anti-gender movements use migration movements to spread moral panic and challenge gender equality.
Upon completion of the Winter School, participants will acquire knowledge and competencies to better understand the concepts of gender, identity, class, ideology, transnationalism, and globalization, use gender as an analytical tool in discussions and research on global political and economic movements and migrations, understand international and regional the legal framework of gender equality, explore the origins and influences of contemporary political currents on a global level that use gender ideology against gender equality, understand the security aspects of migration processes, analyze the impacts of policies and laws that empower migration processes, question and investigate the impacts of global socio-economic, cultural and political contexts to changes in local national contexts, and to think critically about the relations and dynamics of political and economic globalization. After the lectures and the submission of the final paper, the Winter School will be evaluated with 3 ECTS points.
