Panel Discussion on “Arranged Marriages in Modern Society: Tradition, Freedom of Choice, and Equality”

On January 31, 2025, a panel discussion on the topic “Arranged Marriages in Modern Society: Tradition, Freedom of Choice, and Equality” was held at the Grand Amphitheater of the International University of Travnik. The event gathered experts, academics, and students who together explored the important issues surrounding arranged marriages, focusing on their connection to tradition, freedom of choice, and gender equality.

During the panel, the impact of arranged marriages on individuals’ rights, especially minors, was discussed, along with the challenges and consequences these marriages can have on society. The participants examined how arranged marriages, although deeply rooted in tradition, can present challenges when it comes to freedom of choice, human rights, and equality. Special attention was given to the protection of rights, empowering freedom of choice, and the necessary education and legal regulations that could help mitigate the negative effects of arranged marriages.

On the same day, two lectures on gender-based violence were held at the Faculty of Law at the “Džemal Bijedić” University in Mostar.

One lecture, titled “Handling Criminal Offenses: Police-Legal Aspects with a Gender-Based Approach,” was delivered by lecturer Nijaz Tucaković, an independent inspector and head of the Human Resources and Logistics Department at the Ministry of the Interior of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton. The second lecture, “Gender Stereotypes about Women as Rape Victims,” was presented by lecturer Ilijana Miloš, a senior inspector at the same ministry.

These educational sessions, which actively involved students and included practical work by the lecturers, aimed to enhance knowledge and raise awareness about the importance of gender equality and the need to respect it.

Both events were organized as part of the UNIGEM project, implemented by the TPO Foundation.
